You might know that there are multiple way s to access the Dictionary application in OS 10.5 and 10.6. You can launch the application from your Mac’s Application folder, or you can Control-Click on a word in a document, and choose “Look Up in Dictionary” in the contextual menu that pops up.

If you’re in a native Mac application (Safari, Mail, etc), you can launch a mini-Dictionary when you position your cursor over a word (or highlight a word) and hold down Control-Command-D. Clicking “More” at the bottom of this tiny window launches the full Dictionary application.From here it’s evident that you can look up words, correct spelling mistakes, and research synonyms.

You can also research Wikipedia entries related to words in the Dictionary app. OK, great, that’s all well and good. But did you know that there’s another whole level to the Dictionary app? When you click on “Go” in menu at the top of the menu bar, you’ll see a link that says “Front/Back Matter.” Open this and you’ll discover a hidden new universe in your Mac’s dictionary. These are many classic Oxford reference materials here, such as “Rules of English: Understanding Grammar,” “Constitution of the United States of America,” and, perhaps most interestingly, “Clichés.”I let the cat out of the bag, and the ball is now in your court. I know you’re busy as a bee but it’s time to bury the hatchet, pay the piper, and check out Dictionary’s hidden reference materials. It’s a no-brainer. Practice makes perfect. This might be a quick and dirty Mac Treat, but I’m not pulling any punches; I’m putting my money where my mouth is. And last but not least, wonders never cease.

10 Tips for Dealing with Unexpected Computer Slowdowns

Do you have the SRWOD (spinny rainbow wheel of death)??
Unfortunately, mysterious computer slowdowns can be difficult to diagnose. Overstuffed system cache, old temp files, corrupted preferences, a hard drive in the early stages of failure, and faulty RAM are always candidates for causing this problem. Here are some suggestions to resolve system slowdowns.

Also, please make sure you have a solid backup of your Macs important data before proceeding:
make sure your Mac is backed up properly before proceeding.

1. Any Mac will slow down when its hard drive is almost full, regardless of processor speed. Simply moving some of your data (especially media files like movies, video podcasts, etc) to an external drive can greatly improve a Mac’s responsiveness.

2. Clear your Mac’s desktop. The OS has to draw each of those icons as separate windows, so when you have dozens of files littered on the desktop the system is taxed. Clearing the Macs desktop is proven to improve system performance.

3. Make sure your computer is up to date with all the latest software and firmware updates from Apple. This can go a long way to improving system performance. To check this, click the Apple in the top left corner of the screen and select “Software Update…”

4. Simply running a free maintenance program can often help bring a sluggish and flakey machine back to speed. These programs force the Mac’s regular Unix maintenance scripts; normally these run daily, weekly, and monthly early in the morning. Click here for further reading on this.

I use a program called Onyx to run these scripts. It’s effective and easy to use. It starts by checking the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard drive, so you can determine if the drive is failing. This step takes several minutes. After that Onyx can flush system cache, etc.
One catch about Onyx is that it has several options that most people shouldn’t use, such as the option for erasing bookmarks and internet browsing history. I do like and recommend Onyx, though—get it for free from the developer by clicking here. You can also download Onyx directly from Apple’s site by clicking here.

You can also download a simpler program called MacJanitor that will only run the maintenance scripts by clicking here. When a tech diagnoses your Mac, he or she runs a battery of programs that are similar to Onyx. This takes several hours. However, Onyx does a great job for occasional repairs and maintenance.

5. Check the health of your hard drive. I depend on Onyx to verify the S.M.A.R.T. status of my Mac’s hard drive. Immediately back up your computer if you think there’s a real issue with the drive. Then consider using a dedicated drive diagnostic/repair tool such as Disk Warrior. If the drive is having issues and you’re going to replace it, consider using a 7200RPM model. A faster hard drive will result in a (slightly) faster Mac.

6. Check the health of your Mac’s RAM. There are several ways to test the health of your Mac’s RAM. I use Rember, which is a free program that is a front-end GUI to a basic Unix ‘memtest’ command. You can read more about testing RAM by clicking here.

7. Deal with mutant applications. Ok, so maybe the word “mutant” is unfair. However, it’s always a good idea to delete applications that you don’t use. I use AppCleaner to do this.

Also, many apps install helper programs that run by default whenever you startup your Mac. This typically happens in the background, without the user having to confirm anything. Often these aren’t needed and can hog system resources without having anything to show for it. To disable startup items you don’t use, navigate to System Preferences > Accounts > Login items and uncheck the list.
Finally, any active, running application uses system resources including CPU cycles, RAM and disk activity, even when it is in the background and you’re not using it. Some programs leak memory when they are running, which makes them gobble RAM over time.

8. Use Activity Monitor and iStat Pro to analyze which system processes and applications are hogging system resources. You can download the iStat Pro widget by clicking here. Activity Monitor is found in the Utilities Folder which is nested in the Applications folder in OS X.

9. If you have an Intel Mac, use Xslimmer to trim away the legacy PowerPC code from Universal binary applications. Read more by clicking here.

10. Programs that automatically perform syncing, indexing, and backup operations on your Mac can occasionally slow it down. They can sometimes cause minor drags that slow the system for a couple of seconds at a time.

If none of these helps, the problem will likely be more time-consuming to resolve. At Small Dog, our techs run a battery of tests with several software and hardware tools to seek out and fix strange system slowdowns. Hopefully the above suggestions will keep you from having to send in your machine!

Evaluate your data usage; you may discover dozens of gigabytes of obsolete data (TV shows, music, duplicate photos) that could safely be deleted and never missed. This article explores the next level of reclaiming hard drive space. Pruning away unneeded languages and printer drivers, cleaning up random multimedia files, and trashing unneeded application assets can easily free up more than 10GB of hard drive space.

IMPORTANT: I strongly suggest that your Mac is completely backed up before you start deleting files. It's easy to make a mistake and delete something you really wanted to keep. Also, never delete a file if you don't understand its function. Only delete files if you are confident you understand what it does, and does not do. Except where noted, the recommendations below are safe, easy, and well tested.

1. Eliminate Unnecessary Languages
The default installation of Mac OS X includes dozens and dozens of language files, including Bislama, Aymara, Guarani, Inukitut, Manx, Greecelandic, and even Klingon. Most of these will never be used by the average Mac user, but they still take up hundreds to even thousands of megabytes of disk space.

The easiest way to delete these languages is by using a program such as Monolingual (free) to remove everything except for the five English language modules and the other popular languages you may need in real life, or expect to come across online (French, German, Japanese, etc). Again, deleting these languages can free up to 2 gigabytes on some installations of OS X. However, as far as I have been able to determine, the only way to reinstall languages is via a complete reinstall (or archive and install) of OS X.

IMPORTANT: Be very careful not to accidently remove the English language files, even if you don't speak, read, or write English.
Note that these languages are not for the translation of one language to another, but for displaying languages. If you visit a webpage written in Klingon, and you've erased Klingon from your Mac, the page will not display correctly. Monolingual has an option to remove system architectures and input menus, but I don't recommend this. The return megabytes are paltry, and this is a bit riskier than simply erasing unused languages.

2. Wipe Out Unneeded Printer Drivers
By default, most Macs with 10.4 and 10.5 have over 3GB of printer drivers installed on them. Sometimes this is great, because it allows most printers to "just work" with OS X without further software installation. However, if you only use one or two printers, there's really no need to have all those drivers. Also, unlike languages, most printer drivers can be easily downloaded from the internet. I've manually deleted many of these unneeded drivers by navigating to Macintosh HD > Library > Printers and dragging the unneeded drivers to the Trash. I made it easy by only dragging folders with printer brands I don't use to the Trash. I use Canon, Epson, and Xerox, as well as Macromedia; most of the rest were trashed (Lexmark, Samsung, SAVIN, etc.) Some people suggest it's safer to use Printer Setup Repair (Tiger and Panther only) because manually deleting the wrong printer file can damage Mac OS X's printing system. 3. Nuke Unneeded Applications
Most applications hog surprisingly little hard drive space. It's the files created or stored by the applications that tend to actually gobble hard drive space. For example, the iTunes application is only about 38MB, but the iTunes library of music stored by iTunes is usually several gigabytes or more. Likewise the iDVD app is only about 116MB, while a single DVD created by it can easily be over 10GB. Even if they're small, you might as well delete applications you never use.

You should especially delete the trial versions of software that you may have downloaded to evaluate, but now never use. AppZapper, the maker of an excellent app remover writes: "You'd think it would be that easy to delete an app - just a matter of dragging it to the trash. But it's not. Applications install preferences, caches, and other support files throughout your computer that take up space and generate clutter. Deleting these by hand every time you delete an app is a pain." I've also used this and like it quite a bit. It's simple, and it's free. It's not as easy to use as AppZapper, but is worth trying: http://reggie.ashworth.googlepages.com/appdelete

Not all applications are small; for example, iWeb weighs in at more than 300MB due to its complicated (and admittedly attractive) templates. Here's another tip: if you've decided not to use the free trial version of Apple's Pages and Keynote programs in the iWork folder in your Applications folder, you should delete it. The application and templates take up to 1.3GB of drive space. Many of those megabytes are assets and effects for Keynote.

4. Eradicate Unneeded Application Assets
As mentioned above, it's often the assets associated with an application that take up hard drive space. In many cases, you might want or need these assets. Very often, however, the assets are simply larding your drive with filler.

Here are a few tips for taking control of these assets:
Photos, video, and music files take up the most disk space.
A typical iTunes music file takes up about 4MB.
A typical photo (uploaded from your own camera) is about 1.5MB (photos from emails are typically much smaller).
A one-hour TV show from the iTunes Store takes up from 90MB - 250MB.
In iTunes, easy targets include old podcasts (especially video podcasts), music videos, and TV shows you're never going to watch again.

Next, delete iTunes duplicates:
In iTunes, go to View > Show Duplicates to show all tracks with identical names. You can then go through and delete the tracks just as you'd delete any iTunes song. There is a catch: "Show Duplicates" reveals tracks that share the same title, but are actually different tracks. Make sure you are deleting the correct copy by reading the artist and album name along with song title. In iPhoto, begin by deleting multiple versions of the same photo. Digital cameras make it easy to take many nearly-identical photos; people will often take ten shots of the same scene. Keep the two to four best shots and delete the rest. iPhoto is a huge space hog because it retains backup copies of every photo that you edit, including simple edits such as rotation and cropping. This why you can always "revert" to your original photo, no matter how many times you edit it. This can easily gobble many gigabytes of hard drive space.

For versions of iPhoto before iPhoto 7, you can use iPhoto Diet to delete backup copies of all your photos: http://www.rhythmiccanvas.com/software/iphotodiet/

For iPhoto 5, 6, and 7, try Brattoo Propaganda's Duplicate Annihilator, which costs $8.00. Again, don't run these programs unless you have an excellent backup, and you know what you're doing.

Here's another useful-to-know gotcha: when you delete a photo in iPhoto, it's actually moved to iPhoto's Trash. To truly erase your photos, and reclaim your hard drive space, don't forget to empty iPhoto's trash. In iPhoto, browse to iPhoto > Empty Trash.

iMovie also has a redundant Trash. Many people who use iMovie are shocked that there are literally gigabytes of old, deleted movie clips stored there. Also in iMovie, if you are finished editing a movie, burn the project file to DVD or movie the project file to and external drive. As long as the project file is backed up, you can edit it later. iMovie projects can take up many dozens of gigabytes.

If you never use GarageBand, and never plan to, you should delete your GarageBand loops. You'll reclaim 3.7GB. Go to Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support > GarageBand and delete everything in there except the .plist file (preference file).

Then, browse to Macintosh HD > Library > Audio > Loops > Apple Loops for GarageBand and move it to the Trash. If you know you'll never need iLife Sound Effects for iMovie, you can also trash that file. Note that it's easy to move the GarageBand loops to an external drive for future use. Dashboard widgets can be quite large.
Simply deactivating a Widget in Dashboard's control pane does not delete it, but simply hides it for later use.
Browse to Macintosh HD > Library > Widgets to find the Widget folder. Drag unneeded Widgets into the Trash, then empty the Trash to actually get rid of the Widget forever (or until you download it from the internet again). If you've downloaded additional widgets, they may reside here... Users > Documents > Widgets. Go through and clean out.

Screensavers can also take also take up a fair amount of hard drive space. First preview them all in the System Prefs then trash the screensavers you never use. They can appear in two places.
Macintosh HD > Library > Screen Savers
Macintosh HD > Users > Library > Screen Savers

Place seldom-used applications (and application disk images and installers) on an external drive for future use.

5. Misc Tips/Extra Credit: Empty Trash
Don't forget to actually empty Trash. Many people move files to the Trash, but since they never empty it, all those files are simply sitting there.

- Use a Finder search or a utility like CleanApp to identify files you haven't used in a long time. If you haven't touched a file in a year, archive it to external media and delete the original.

- Purge Your Downloads folder. Burn any downloaded installers and disk-image files you may need later to CD or DVD, then Trash them out of your browser's Downloads folder. Most installers can simply be trashed without burning to disk, because you can always download them from the web later.

- Delete excess & obsolete email. I prefer to keep all copies of my email on my Mac. I personally have to look up old emails daily. However, my accumulated mail messages take up gigabytes of space. If you never need to refer to old emails, you can either delete your old email or use a program such as Pubblog.com's MailSteward ($50) to archive older messages to external media or another computer. Note that email attachments can hog lots of hard drive space. In OS X Mail, you can remove attachments from saved or sent messages by selecting one or more messages and choosing Message > Remove Attachments.

- Every few months, scan your Documents folder associated subfolders, and delete any items you no longer need.

- Periodically clear cache files. Many applications, as well as OS X itself, cache data to improve their performance. Over time, these caches can grow huge, slowing performance and devouring disk space. The applications that created the cache files regenerate them automatically, so you can usually delete cache files without fear. Many cache files are stored in Library > Caches and your user folder > Library > Caches. To automate cache cleaning, use a program such as Maintain's Cocktail ($15): http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/index.php Or Onyx (free): http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20070

- Use Xslimmer to trim fat code and gain speed from applications: http://www.xslimmer.com/

- Finally, you can compress files that you rarely use but want to keep. Select a file or folder and choose File . Create Archive Of file name. Then delete the original, uncompressed item. Use Allume's StuffIt Deluxe to create even smaller file archives.

7. Visualize Where It Goes
If you're inexplicably still missing gigabytes, run a program like GrandPerspective. It's a free, open source application that analyzes your hard drive and gives you a graphical representation of where all your space has gone. If you find something you don't need, you can click the Reveal button to see it in Finder, or even simply hit Delete and send it packing.

Additionally, you can drill down on directories to get a closer look at the smaller files, which you can probably tell seem minuscule next to the big boys. http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/ Similar to GrandPerspective, WhatSize is a shareware app that shows you exactly how much space files and folders are taking up on your Mac. It offers a file size column in a Finder-like interface. Hidden files, cache files, directories will all show up with their corresponding size. Use it for free to measure up to 20GB of data, or purchase a license for $12.99 to measure any volume, have access to the System Administrator functionality and support development of new features: http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize/

Disk Inventory X is a disk usage utility for Mac OS X 10.3 (and later). It shows the sizes of files and folders in a special graphical way called "treemaps". It's free: http://www.derlien.com/ OmniDiskSweeper is a utility for quickly finding and deleting big, useless files and thus making space on your hard disks. It can be used in unlicensed mode to search for big files on your disks, but if you pay the $15 license fee you'll have access to a handy button that also lets you delete those files: http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper/

Sidebar Folders « My Mac Tips

Wouldn’t you love to have quick access to some of your most used folders in any Finder window? Now you can!

All you have to do is open a Finder window and drag the folder of your choice to the Places section of the sidebar. (If your sidebar is not currently opened, click View>Show Sidebar or press Option+Command+S to show the sidebar.)

Or you can simple select the folder(s) and press Command+T to add them to the sidebar, and they will automatically be placed at the bottom of the Places section.

Note: You can only add one folder at a time to the sidebar by dragging, but you can add multiple folders at one time by using Command+T.

If you decide later you want to remove a folder from the sidebar, simply right-click the sidebar item, and click Remove from Sidebar.
You can also rename a folder in the sidebar by right-clicking the item, and clicking Rename. (This will rename the actual folder also because the sidebar item is simply a shortcut to the folder.) This is a great tool that gives you easy access to any folder you add to the sidebar.

Don’t you wish you could have some programs open automatically every time you turn your computer on?

Well, it’s very easy with a Mac. There are two ways you can do this:

First, while the program is in your dock, right-click it, and click Options>Open at Login.
The second way is to go to open System Preferences and click Accounts.
Then, click the Login Items tab, and you can easily click the plus sign to Add an item to the Login Items List.
Then, just find the application you want to add, select it, and click Add.

You can then delete the selected item later by clicking the minus sign while the item is selected.

Another helpful hint: You can click the check box beside an application in the list the hide the item on login.
So, the application will open when you start your computer, but it will not be visible. It will just stay in your dock.
This is helpful if you open several applications at login, but don’t want them to clutter your screen.

A photo’s icon is a tiny version of the photo itself, making browsing through a packed-full folder in the Finder less of a chore than it might be otherwise. A customer came in yesterday wondering why some of his icons showed this preview and others didn’t. I didn’t know the answer at first and began poking around preferences and ‘asking’ Google. This was a great question that had me stumped for a few minutes.

I revisited the “Show View Options” window from the Finder’s View menu and saw what I missed the first time through: a checkbox for “Show icon preview.” With this checked, all icons—not just a random few—were turned into previews. Snow Leopard adds functionality to the icon preview for PDF files. If you resize the icons to something greater than 64 × 64 pixels using the slider at the bottom-right of a Finder window, you can place the pointer over the icon and arrows will appear, allowing you to preview the document page-by-page.

Here’s one more—super simple—method to add to your window switching tool kit: just click on the application’s Dock icon. Don’t click-and-hold, don’t Control-click, just click. If the app in question is already frontmost, each click will move to the next Space containing a window from that application. If the selected app is in the background, the first click will bring any windows in the current Space to the foreground, and then subsequent clicks will begin cycling through the open windows in each Space.

Depending on your usage preferences, you may find this method simpler than some of the others.

Today is the day I've been waiting 364 days for. Today is the day that our beloved little iCal turns three years old. He's past his terrible two's and there's nowhere to go but up from here. Who knows? Perhaps this year iCal will have repeating todo items and Jade will finally get a full night's sleep. This could very well be the year that iCal gets some sort of integration into an enterprise system ala-Exchange that sends Mac IT nerds to Nirvana (the place, not the band).

Some people think that July 17th has some sort of special significance, like Steve Jobs' birthday, but its really only the date that iCal was introduced to the public—some might say birthed—July 17th, 2002.

Read up here on all the cool things you can do to alter the date and appearance of the iCal icon, and don't forget to sing happy birthday to iCal today, if even under your breath.

Finally Got Leopard!

In addition to a new keyboard & mouse that I got recently (the wireless Apple ones!) I also finally got Leopard and an new (used) video card, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, w/128MB, and a few more HDs, internal for a total of over 500GB, plus I have my networked HD which is another 500GB.

I have been taking the on-line, FREE, Adobe Illustrator class. I missed the first lesson, but the second class was great! It's like all the cool stuff that you want to do in PS but don't know how! Plus I feel good about perhaps making use of one of the other programs in my CS!

BTW, I just got the Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse & the Wireless Keyboard and they are the best mouse and keyboard I have used. The tiny mouse ball looks too small to use but it is so precise and now I can go sideways too! It is also the quietest clicking mouse I have tried. They keyboard is also very quiet. No big clacking keys; so smooth, nice tight key action! Plus they fire rigth up. Not like my old s-l-o-w butt bluetooth peripherals!

Really recommend these!

Photoshop Woes...Fixed, at least for now!

For a couple of months now I have been wrangling with an intermittent issue in PS9 [CS2], my now dreaded "Could not complete your request because of a program error" error message.
I get this generic, not helpful message often, if I try to open a new psd or open an existing psd, png or jpg. Sometimes it works fine for several days.

I have reinstalled PS countless times, a slow and tedious procedure. We replaced RAM & Graphics Cards and of course ran various utility programs, even checked for virus, even tho it's a Mac.

After more extensive research, apparently a fairly common issue, some people feel that it is font related. My next step was to check my way to many fonts and see if there are some corrupt ones in there.

So, maybe that was all it was! I hope! I used Apple's Font Book* to 'validate' all my fonts, deleted the ones that were bad or questionable. There about 8 or so. Luckily I did a major house clean of fonts recently so there were a lot fewer than there use to be!

*If you haven't used Apple's Font Book, check it out. It's in your applications folder. You can organize your fonts into categories that make sense to you, and turn some of the less frequently used fonts off until needed and of course check for corrupt font files.

Michelle, the fonts show up in the big long list in PS (CS+) too.

That's a good reason to use Font Book to create collections,

this way you can figure out the name of the font that you want

and then be able to find it in PS(E).

Set jpg and png files to open in PS[E]

Set all of your jpg and png files to open up in your PS or PSE.
Select a jpg file. 'Get Info' on the file by any of the following ways:
Command (Apple Key) 'I'
File>Get Info
Get Info Icon on your Finder Window* (More on this in previous post)

Here is the 'Get Info' Window that will pop-up:

Open the 'Open With' area the scroll through to select either PS or PSE.

Below it shows the jpg file selected, the Get Info window open and selecting PS.

Then choose 'Change All'.
Then do the same thing on a png file.
Now when you open all of your supplies, they will open in PS or PSE.
Then just drag on to your open PS(E) document.

Customize Your Finder Toolbar

Ever wonder where those pesky specials characters that aren’t written on your keyboard (e.g. ¢, ©, ®, ™) are when you’re writing? They’re all listed in Character Palette—part of OS X.

Easy access can be found either as a part of your other Apple Apps (such as Mail, TextEdit, Stickies, etc.) or in the International panel of System Preferences. (System Preferences > International > Input Menu)

(Be sure and click the button at he bottom that says
'Show Input menu in menu bar'!)

If you find that you use these symbols a fair amount and would like to see them quickly, check the Character Palette checkbox and “Show input menu in menu bar.” The latter will display a little flag icon in the top righthand corner of your menu bar (how patriotic!).

Another tip for finding some symbols that you use more than others is to remember the keyboard shortcuts. Here’s a cheatsheet for my most popular ones:
Accent Acute (´): Option-E
Bullet (•): Option-8
Cent (¢): Option-4
Copyright (©): Option-G
Degree (˚): Option-K
Registered (®): Option-R

Firstly, there's no guarantee that we Mac users will continue to enjoy the status quo, but more importantly, the majority of the computing world use machines running MS Windows, for which an enormous quantity of viruses exist, so we must be vigilant in checking the files we pass on to our friends and colleagues etc. For example, if you're a wise person and you've turned MS Office's macro support off then you're not going to notice that virus which is hiding inside this month's edition of Extreme Ironing.doc which your friend sent you. If you then forward that document to a less wise person who has not turned off the macro support, then you have most likely just sent him a shiny new Pandora's Box with a sign saying "Open this end"!

Flippancy aside, I'm sure you get the idea: check the file before opening and/or sending it on to someone else. This gives you the opportunity to avoid the file altogether or at least copy and paste any vital information into a new document and send that instead.

Don't forget, if you run VirtualPC you can still become infected and lose valuable data on your Mac even though technically you're running Windows inside a sandbox. VPC will run any application you tell it to, virus or no virus, it doesn't know the difference. You can protect yourself slightly by not using VPC's "shared folders", but that's a useful feature which you shouldn't have to be without.

Finder Pop: Enhance your contextual menus

FinderPop is a Preference pane that extends OS X's contextual menus using a FinderPop Items folder much as the Apple Menu Items folder used to do for the Apple menu.

Classic Window Mode

Recently someone asked about bringing application windows to the front and having just the one window coming forward versus all the open windows within that app coming forward.

It used to be that when you clicked on an app with open windows all the open windows in the app all come, [Classic Window Mode]. But it was changed in X to only the one clicked would come.

There is a third party app that contains the preference for this but I had forgotten it and now I remember.

It is an application switcher called ASM , here www.vercruesse.de/software. It creates a preference pane in the system preferences. There is a lot it can do. One thing is to set the prefs for the windows as I mentioned.

In the 'special features' tab chose on or off for Classic Window Mode. I have it set to 'on', all open app windows come forward.

Example: Handy when I am in PS and I want all my open Finder windows to come forward, one for the elements folder and one for the papers folder of a kit I am working with.

You can enable the shift key to change this to a single window. Example: when you want to grab a file from the Finder to drop on an email, etc and you don't want multiple windows cluttering things up.

ASM brings back the application switcher menu (and more) to Mac OS X. It's highly customizable and offers some nice extra features. Single Application Mode (automatically hides applications other than the front-most one).

Mac Treats are meant to be quick and easy “how to” tips for getting more from your Mac on a daily basis. Many of these Treats elicit a “wow, I didn’t know you could do that!” reaction from readers. I find it oddly satisfying to discover, harness, and share the seemingly hidden features of Mac OS X. Occasionally, I stumble across an OS X feature that all my fellow Mac users seem to know – except for me.

For example: in Apple’s Mail program, did you know you can easily color code email messages in your inbox? This is useful if you want to flag certain messages for appropriate responses.

I just learned that you can manually do this by selecting an email, then pressing Command-Shift-C. The Apple color chooser window will pop up. You can use the color wheel to choose a color, but for this task I prefer the “crayon” view in the color chooser. In Mail, you can also get the color window to open by navigating to the menu bar at the top of the screen and choosing “Format > Choose Colors.”

It’s also easy to get Mail to automatically flag email by color as it enters your inbox. For example, lets say you’re married but have a boyfriend or mistress, and you don’t want their emails to get mixed up. Wait, no, don’t use that example.

Let’s say you want email from your boss to be flagged with green. In Mail’s menu at the top of the screen, click on Preferences, then in the window that opens, click Rules (note that sometimes the Rules button is hidden far to the right, and you have to drag the window larger to see it). Click “Add Rule”, choose the input criteria, and under “Perform the following actions” choose “Set Color of Message” in the drop-down menu. You may need to adjust the input critereia to make this work perfectly. This is an easy way to make sure important emails stand out in your probably-swamped inbox.

Is this how your icons look??

By default, Mac OS X shows a generic, white icon when displaying a thumbnail of an image in a folder or on the Mac’s desktop. Many people find this frustrating, especially switchers who are used to the way Windows shows a little preview thumbnail of the actual image.

Fortunately it’s very easy to change this, so you will see a thumbnail preview of your images. Whenever I get a new Mac, this is one of the very first preferences I set.

From the Finder’s menu bar at the top of the screen, click on View > Show View Options (activate the Finder by clicking on its blue “Happy Mac” icon at the end of your dock, or by simply clicking on an empty space on your Mac’s desktop). In the Finder, you can also use the keyboard shortcut Command-J.

Once the View Options menu opens, check the box that says “Show icon preview.”
Note that you can also choose the size of the icons in the View Options menu. Close the menu, and now all of your generic thumbnails will show a preview of the actual image.

Also, it may take a second or two for OS X to create thumbnails in folders with hundreds of images.

The results!

Don't forget, you must be 'in' the Finder to see the correct menu.
If you don't see what my screen shot shows, click into the Finder first.

When you open up the VIEW menu, first be 'in' a finder window.
Then, go to the VIEW menu and select ...as icons.

Mac Basics: Efficiently Select Multiple Files

On the Mac, there are two easy keyboard shortcuts for selecting multiple files at a time. These shortcuts work in most OS X applications, including Address Book, Mail, iTunes, and iPhoto. I use these shortcuts while scrolling through iPhoto to quickly select photos for a photo album; I use these shortcuts while scrolling through iTunes to quickly make a music playlist.

To choose a congruent list of files from a larger list or group of files, click on the first file you want, then hold down the Shift key, then click on the last file at the end of your list. All files in between will be highlighted. You can drag and drop the highlighted files or even move them to the trash.

If you want to pick and choose non-congruent files out of a larger group, simply hold down the Command key while selecting files. The selected files will be highlighted. Again, you can drag and drop these highlighted files or move them to the trash.

I am about to embark on another video slideshow. UGH!
Last time my regular jpgs looked fine but my photoshop-scrapped jpgs looked grainy and poor in the final DVD movie. the whole reason they asked ME to do the movie is because they like it 'scrapped'. so I am feeling very 'flummoxed'! Speaking of flummoxed, here is an article I came across regarding iMovie versions.

iMovie '08 is very different from earlier versions of iMovie. Indeed, if you're used to earlier versions, iMovie '08 can be downright confusing. I appreciate the simplified, streamlined nature of iMovie '08, along with the video cataloging features (sort of a video version of iPhoto). I also like how easy it is to upload videos directly from iMovie '08 to YouTube - it's literally just three mouse clicks away. Also, iMovie '08 seems to handle and output HD video better than iMovie HD (how ironic).

However, there are a number of classic iMovie features missing in iMovie '08. Most visual effects (including slow motion, reverse motion, fast motion, and black-and-white), the ability to create DVD chapter markers, and the ability to have more than one project open at a time are all missing. This baffled me last week when I wanted to use iMovie to speed up a time-lapse HD video.

Fortunately, Apple has kept iMovie HD available as a download. It's a very large download - 155 MB - but it's also free. Get it here:

Not really Mac related, but I got a new camera!

So my birthday was October 12th and my husband got me a new camera!
First of all, I like photography, but I am pretty sucky at it. My old camera was a really good camera (to me) but it was 5 years old. We had gotten the Olympus 5050 when Corinne was born in 2003. We got the 'does everything' Olympus C-5050Zoom camera but it is HUGE!

Back then we already had several compact flash cards, which were not so cheap back then and I really like the idea of using regular AA batteries. I used rechargables and on occassion just grabbed some AA's while out somewhere. But writing to the CF cards is very slow and I really hated taking it to places like amusement parks and parties.

Since I don't like carting it around everywhere I go, so I often just use my cell phone camera, which is very good, Sony Ericsson W810i and after a little photoshop, the pics are usually really nice. Much of my Digital Scrapbook stuff is now with cell phone pics!

So bring on the Olympus Stylus 840 8MP-5xOZ

The Finder Method & 'folder.jpg' Smart Folder

I saw some questions at DST about organizing. As for me, I just use the Finder Method. All of my kits are on a second internal drive. I have set up a system of folders to house my files. This is what mine looks like, and I just suggest that you create a system that makes sense to you.

I organize by shoppe, and/or designer. I also make aliases of certain things such as favorite overlays, frames, buttons, ribbons, templates, etc. More on this later.

To browse through my kits, I generally have an idea of what designer's style I am in the mood for when I begin with a photo. So let's say I want Doris Castle. I go to my SB Elements folder and look through my Doris kits.

Green labled kits are ones that I bought, so I'll know to be sure and use them!!

To see the contents of each kit, I flip into icon view and
toggle back and frouth from column view to icon view.

To utilize the 'folder.jpg' preview that most designers are including in kits now, I have to share this tip from tlccreates:

In the Finder create a new Smart Folder and specify folder.jpg files (most kits already have that file and if they don't, rename the preview folder.jpg). Presto ! I have a folder that collects previews of all my kits - automatically - and I can select a kit and then choose to open up that kit's folder (these are just alias' ).

Now go to your new "Previews" Smart Folder
-- select a preview and the path shows up along the bottom of the folder
-- select a preview and choose Open Enclosing Folder to go to the kit
-- use the slider along the bottom to enlarge the thumbnails or fill the screen with tiny ones
-- select multiple ones and hit the space bar to open them up in Quick Look for an up close look, use the arrow keys to move between the other selected files
-- select multiple ones and drag them to Preview in the Dock and they will open up in preview with one enlarged and the others along the side (you can drag additional images onto that sidebar too)
------ While in Preview you can select all>print>choose the number per page (not copies that just duplicates the thumbs) > and you will get a contact sheet of preview - unfortunately there won't be any kit names with them, or paths, just eye candy

I've also set up Smart Folders for jpg files that are 3600x3600 for most of my "Papers". And I have one for psd files in my ScrapStuff/Elements folder which are my "Templates".

Create catagory folders such as ribbon, frames, flowers, stitches, etc. Download CocoThumbX, a
Freeware program that creates 128x128 Mac OS X icons for images.

Just drag your files or folders onto the application icon or the drop place in CocoThumbX, it will start to create beautiful icons.

So I keep this in my dock and just drag a preview file over it and it turns it into an icon. Then alias it. (has to be done on the file, will not work on an alias). Then drag your new alias into the catagory folder.

Right-click on the item that you want an alias of. I usually use the preview of the item. Choose Alias from the contextual menu.

Then move the alias to the appropriate folder. In the example I made an alias of Nancy Comlab's comicbook style caption balloons. I moved the alias of the preview into a folder I have set up for comic-y things. [Yes, one day I will use them!]

So, now you will know where to look for such a thing, so go there and right-click on the alias and choose show original from the contextual menu. This will bring you to the folder that houses this original.

In this case it brings me to Nancy Comlab's folder in my TLP folder. This is so handy when you know the item that you want, but can't remember who made it or from which store. I use this method for things like stitches, frames, ribbon, buttons, etc.

Have you ever wanted to "zoom into" your Mac's screen to get a closer look at text or an image? If you have Mac OS X, it's very easy. On a Mac with an external mouse, hold down the "Control" key (located under the shift key and marked "ctrl" on many keyboards) and roll forward or backwards with the mouse's scroll wheel.

On a Mac laptop with two-finger scrolling enabled, hold down the Control key and mouse up and down while holding two fingers on the touchpad. You can enable two-finger scrolling on most Apple laptops running 10.4 or 10.5 in System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse.

Notice how the screen will stay zoomed in and follow your mouse around until you zoom all the way out. Pretty cool!

iPhoto Tip: Edit Photo in Photoshop

In the general preferences choose your application in the Edit photo pull down menu.
When you double click a photo it will open in the application that you chose.

This is a great way to use the two programs together. This allows you to easily select your photo from iPhoto, even do a bit of quick editing in there, enhance, crop, whatever, and then double click, now your in Photoshop, continue editing, run actions, etc then place photo in your LO. All this does not affect your original photo in iPhoto.

**This is iPhoto 6. I am sure there is a similar setting in the latest version.

Mac Users, you don't have to switch from iPhoto to LightRoom

I am not switching from iPhoto to LR. I am going to continue to use iPhoto to import, manage and store all of my photos and use LightRoom to edit and adjust, one at a time, as needed.

When I want to work with a specific photo, I import it from iPhoto into LR. You can follow the import path in LR and nav your way to the photo,

Tip: First go into iPhoto and view by roll, so you know which roll to choose from.

or just export your photo from iPhoto to your desktop, or wherever and then import it into LR. From there, after you have made your LR adjustments, export into Photoshop.

Set this up in the prefs under External Editing. Then choose 'Photo' > Export to Photoshop.

I wanted a rounded corner edge for some of my 70's scanned photos. I could not find an action and the tutorials were complicated and to hard to remember all the steps so I made a 5x7 Rounded Corner Clipping Mask. Please feel free to use it.

BEFORE: Original photo had the 70's rounded corners, but scanned badly.

AFTER: With Clipping Mask Applied

Open photo and clipping mask in Photoshop.
Place clipping mask layer under photo. **
Align as desired.

Select photo layer, go LAYER, CREATE CLIPPING MASK.
Then LAYER, MERGE VISIBLE.
Then drag onto new canvas.
Resize and shadow as desired.

**If the photo layer is locked, duplicate it and drag the dup above the clipping mask layer.
then delete the bottom locked photo layer.

Organizing Actions in Photoshop

Grandmalynnie at KB & Friends asked me to help out in the PS chat today. here is what we discussed about actions:

First I rename mine in a way that makes sense to me. I group mine by type, like all the black & white conversions together, all the color enhancers together, vintage, acids, exposure, etc. So figure out how you want yours. I also include some indication as to the author of the action for credit purposes. For example "Stickers-Kim Hill".

Once that is done, load the action into the palette by double clicking on the new action and PS will automatically place the new action at he bottom of the Actions palette list. *Thanks Sallie K for that shortcut!

Or, place each action in the folders Adobe Photoshop>Presets>Photoshop Actions. Load each action by clicking the tiny triangle to the right in the Actions palette. Scroll down to Load Action. Then navigate to Adobe Photoshop>Presets>Photoshop Actions, and chose each action.

After each one is loaded, I drag each one up or down the list to arrange as I like, alphabetically, grouped by author or type, etc.

I also keep a sticky listing commonly used items for credit purposes. Stuff like actions, frames, shadows, fonts, stuff like that.

"When I do a 'get info', there is no image showing in the left corner. How do you make the image of the file showing there?"

Loading Brushes

A new digi-scrapper wants to know how to load brushes.
Here's how to do it in PS or PSE.

First add your new brushes to the brushes floder in the application's folder.
Example: Applications>PSE>Presets>Brushes

Then select the brush tool, then click on the pull down arrow, here, marked number 1.
Then click the small arrow marked number 2. Choose Load brushes. Then navigate to your bushes folder and choose.

Do the same process for Actions and Layer styles as well. Have fun!!

Organizing Digi Files on your Mac

I saw some questions at DST about organizing. So, first there was the idea of making the folder icon into a preview of the kit, which is fgreat, if, you will switch into icon view.*

To change the folder icon, do a 'get info', on the folder or image that you want such ans a kit preview. [the image may have to be 72ppi, so if it doesn't work check to make sure it is not 300ppi, as some previews are 72 and some are 300]. To do a 'get info' see this post.

Click on the image in the top, left corner then copy.

Then go to the folder that you want the preview on and do a 'get info'.
Click the plain folder icon in the top left of the get info window,
just as before and then paste.

The image you want should now be the folder icon.
If not, check the ppi of the image and or try again.
Now flip into icon view.

As for organizing, there are many methods, just go over to DST and ask!

Lesson #6: Making the Most of your Dock

In the Finder, go to the Apple and Open > Dock Preferences.

You can select the size, magification, choose the postion of the dock, [I prefer mine on the right side], effect and hiding. Play around with these settings until you get it the way you like it.

You can control applications in the dock by right-clicking on them in the dock [or control-click]. By bringing up this contextual menu you can Remove from dock, Open at Login, show in finder, Hide and Quit.

Also drag and drop to arrange your apps in a way that makes sense to you. To remove something you can also drag out and release and 'literally, 'poof' it is gone! To add apps to the dock, just go to the Applications folder and drag stuff in.

You can also add folders and other documents to the right hand side of the dock, to the right of the seperator. I have added a the folder that contains my PS Actions since I add them alot, this way I don't have to go digging for the folder everytime. You could add folder of anything in the dock! The dock holds just the aliases so don't worry about removing things.

Lesson #5: Contextual Menus

To all of you new Mac users, I would go out immediately and get a multi button mouse! I love Macs but I really need a multi button mouse. I used the trackpad [on my old Powerbooks] for years, but when I started using PS I needed the mouse. [Now I have a souped up G4 Powermac].

I use this Bluetooth cordless mouse by Macally.

The main reason I need this mouse was so I can more conveniently use contextual menus.
"Contextual menus are a great way to do things faster and more efficiently on your Mac. They also give you some added functionality to programs, while just giving you easier access to frequently used commands in others. Overall, contextual menus are very useful. If you haven't considered using them, try them out- you just may start asking yourself how you could have lived without them. " By Adam Guha Read more about contextual menus here.

I have augmented my CMs further with this freeware program to add even more funcionality to my contextual menus. It is called Finderpop. You can get it here at Versiontracker.

There are so many things you can do with a couple of right clicks!

• Label your item with a color.
I have made all the kit previews red so I can see them at a glance when in column view.

• Make an alias of your item.
Perhaps you love a ribbon in a kit, so add an alias of it to your favorite ribbons folder.

• Move the item to a different folder.
Your done with the kit so move it to another folder without having to open more Finder windows and dragging it there. Just right-click and choose your destination folder!

These are just a few examples of what you can do with contextual menus! Have fun!

If you do not have a multi-button mouse or are using a track pad, use the Contol Key when you click instead.

Here is a vital iPhoto tip for ya!
After getting all your photos in there, go to iPhoto Preferences, iPhoto> Preferences,
See sceeen shot below... Then choose photoshop below..

This way when you double click a photo in iPhoto, it will open a duplicate to work with in Photoshop, so, you can do some editing in iPhoto if you wish like easy red eye or crop, etc then open a dup in PS and not have to worry about saving that. Your original photo is safe in iPhoto.

Also, in iPhoto prefs, set your keywords like below.

This way you can find things easily.

Let's begin with opening a kit and selecting a paper. Since the papers are jpgs and the elements are pngs you want to make a permanent setting for both of these file formats.
On that paper do a 'Get Info'. Do this any of these ways:

• Right click [if using a two-button mouse] or
• Option-Click or
• choose File>Get Info or
• choose the blue 'i' from the finder window toolbar. [View, customize toolbar.]

Where it says 'open with', choose photoshop and then 'change all'.

Everytime you open a jpg, it will open in PS.
Do the same thing on a png file.

GREETINGS!! Welcome to Digi Mac Scrap!

Inspired by my new Mac using friends, I have decided to start up this new blog as a way of helping everyone who is just starting out on their first mac or returning to a Mac.

It is great to get help and advice anywhere we can, but, as digiscrappers we want specific advice that is going help us spend less time 'futsing' around and more time scrapping!

To view thumbnails, first, customize your Finder window.
Do this by going into the Finder and go to View, Customize Toolbar.
I have arranged some screenshots here so you can see exactly...

Choose the 'view' one and drag it up to the toolbar of the Finder window.

Done, then go to a kit folder and select it, then choose icon view from the button as shown here. You can flip back and forth from icon view to column view. Use column view for navigating and icon view for browsing your kit contents.
